Your first period deserves more than guesswork.

A period is a normal part of growing up. It is okay to be curious, surprised or unsure.

01

What is a period?

Blood and tissue from the lining of the uterus (womb) leave the body through the vagina. Periods can start around age 8; the average is around 12. There is no single right age for everyone.

02

If it starts at school

Ask a teacher, school nurse or trusted adult for a pad and help. You do not have to cope alone. You can say: “I think my period has started. Can you help me?”

03

What may vary

A period usually lasts 2–7 days. Early cycles can be irregular. Tell a trusted adult if pain stops normal activities, you feel unwell, or bleeding worries you.
